The Department of Justice
Mission Statement : Cabinet department in the United States government designed to enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. This includes securing the people under any circumstances convenant to all laws of the U.S.
The Judiciary Act of 1789, created the Office of the Attorney General. The attorney general had to conduct all suits supreme court that involved or implied to the U.S. They had to state their opinion to the president and to the heads of any department. The defective thing was that it was in the position of one person. Since one person couldnt keep up with all that work, they had to hire several assistants for attorney general. Private attorneys had to preserve cases. Since their was a large number of attorneys getting paid {big bucks} to handle the workload, an act known as the 1870 act was passed. It was set up as the executive department of government of the united states. The Attorney general was its head. It was to handle the legal business of the United States.The Act gave the Department control over all criminal prosecutions and civil suits in which the United States had an interest. In addition, the Act gave the Attorney General and the Department control over federal law enforcement. It started the office of Solicitor General. It has become the world's largest law office and the central agency for enforcement of federal laws.
